The present building is a restoration of a much earlier one, which was partly 13th century with a 15th century arcade and north aisle. Only the arcade and part of the walls of the original are still to be seen.
A modern carving on a front bench end is of a faithful dog with its head resting on its master's coffin. The master was Sir Alfred Jodrell, at whose expense the church was rebuilt and who died in 1929, being buried at Letheringsett. He wanted no memorial for himself but instead asked that a monument be erected inside the vestry door in memory of those who helped in the rebuilding of the church.
By the way, if you think that the carving is similar to Landseer's picture "The Shepherd's Chief Mourner", you are right!
