DOWN UNDER ADVENTURE

PART 1: TICKET TO OZ

How my longing to trace descendants of my late mother's eldest brother, who emigrated to Western Australia with his wife and children in 1912, led  me into a dream adventure.

PARTS 2 & 3: PERTH and FREMANTLE

Scenes I enjoyed in these two  cities. To be expanded after my next visit!

PART 4: SEARCHING FOR MUNDIWINDI

.... let that page speak for itself.

PART 5: TO MARBLE BAR AND BEYOND

A journey up to Marble Bar (hottest place in Australia when it really gets going) and down the west coast of WA back to Perth.

A willy-willy, diamond mine, gold mine, overnight on a cattle station, School of the Air, aboriginal petroglyphs, stromatolites, it's all there - and more.

 BENCH ENDS AND GREEN MEN

Ongoing. Beautiful carvings of bench ends in East Anglian churches as I discover them in my wanderings, and a few Green Men encountered.

I've been called several names in the past -
the good ones to my face - but none
which has such power to evoke memories as

"red earth woman".

So much lies behind that phrase.

   But of that, more later.....

THE CALL OF PLACE

I hear them speak of roots, of having place.

My roots are coiled within -

they move wherever I may move

and anchor where I stay

so that I call a two night stop my home,

and am content.

Each place I visit

threads its way into my thoughts
and stakes a claim.
I note its ways, feel the throb of its great heart,
hear its soft insistent voice call through to me

and learn to make its song my own.

Then, with the leaving time,

appears an ache as if I’m cast adrift

from somewhere that has held me close for years.

The land cries “do not go”

but gives me tokens that I hold against

the day that, just perhaps,

I may return.

Comments, especially if you have been there, done that, would be received with interest.

The site is in its infancy but is launched because I am impatient.

Hopefully, it will develop.
